Unravelling the wonders of (t)RNA molecules and their modifications in the context of disease

We are a passionate team of scientists at iBiMED, University of Aveiro, driven by a fascination for tRNAs, RNA modifications, and the hidden layers of gene expression control. At the heart of our research is a simple but powerful idea: that tRNAs—and the chemical marks they carry—hold untapped potential as both biomarkers and therapeutic tools in human disease.

From neurodegeneration to infection, we study how tRNA modifications shape cellular function and contribute to disease. Using cutting-edge molecular biology, biotechnology and -omics technologies, we profile the tRNA epitranscriptome in diverse disease models and explore strategies to modulate these molecules and restore cellular balance.

Our goal is to harness this knowledge to develop novel RNA-targeted therapeutic strategies.
